Making Bitcoin legal tender is Mexico will be ‘an uphill battle,’ says Ricardo Salinas

Cointelegraph sat down with Ricardo Salinas (founder and chairman of Grupo Salinas) during the Bitcoin 2022 Conference. Salinas was an early Bitcoin (BTC), adopter. He has seen the highs and lows firsthand, and has learned a lot along the way.

Salinas began the day by participating in a panel discussion at the Miami Beach Convention Center’s main stage. He was joined by fellow billionaires Marcelo Claure, Dan Tapiero and Orlando Bravo. Salinas revealed that Bitcoin accounts for 60% of his portfolio, while oil and gas investments account for 40%.

Indira Kempis, a fellow conference attendee, announced that she had proposed legislation to legalize Bitcoin in Mexico. If the legislation is passed, Mexico will follow El Salvador, Roatan and Honduras, as well as Madeira, Portugal. Salinas was asked his opinion on the matter. His country is “unfortunately” too attached to fiat control, which he refers to as “fiat fraud”.

“The central bank and the ministry of finance loathe Bitcoin because it is a threat to their monopoly currency and the freedom it offers.

Banco Azteca’s Mexican bank founder, Salinas, admits that he is part of a flawed system. He also says that he would love to see his bank have access to bitcoin deposits, payments and lending. He is working to enable all retailers to accept Bitcoin payments, while he’s still the founder of Banco Azteca, the Mexican bank.

He spoke with Cointelegraph about how Bitcoiners still make up a small portion of the population, and that it is still far from universal adoption. He reminded viewers that regardless of their age, the most important quality an investor can possess is curiosity and the willingness to learn.
