‘Huge testing milestone’ for Ethereum: Ropsten testnet Merge set for June 8

With the Ropsten testnet Merge scheduled for June 8, Ethereum is poised to hit a “huge milestone in testing”

According to the Merge Testnets page on Github on Monday, Parathi Jayanathi, Ethereum DevOps engineer, submitted a pull request to the Ropsten Merge configuration code. This suggests that the implementation is now ready.

Ropsten was one of many testnets that the Ethereum Foundation created in 2017. It is currently maintained and managed by the Geth development team.

Because it uses a similar network structure, this testnet can be considered the best replication of Ethereum Mainnet. This allows developers to test deployment scenarios before actually updating the mainnet.

The Ropsten testnet Merge will combine the proof-of work network with a new PoS consensus layer testnet. Its genesis is set for May 30, with its completion expected to be in June. It will simulate what happens when the Merge between Ethereum & the Beacon Chain takes place, and it becomes an PoS network.

The community has been sharing their optimism about the testnet news online by devs. Preston Van Loon, an Ethereum core development engineer at PrysmaticLabs stated that:

“Ropsten testnet will be merged on June 8,!” Merging Ropsten will be a major milestone in the development of Ethereum’s mainnet Merge later in the year. The Ropsten testnet will merge on June 8. A core developer, trent_vanepps, tweeted last week that the Sepolia/Georli testnets might be used for trial Merges.

The testnet timeline is consistent with comments made by Tim Beiko, an Ethereum developer who said last month that the Merge wouldn’t be ready for live until “few more months after June.”

He stated that although there was no firm date, “We’re certain in the last chapter of PoW for Ethereum.”

An additional indicator that things are moving in a positive direction is the announcement by the Ethereum Foundation earlier in the week that it had merged its PoW mainnet bug bounty programs and PoS consensus layers into one.

The maximum reward for reporting bugs on Ethereum is now $250,000. However, it can be doubled at critical times like upgrades to public testnets that are also available for the mainnet.

The announcement stated that the payout total was 10x higher than the maximum payout on Consensus Layer bounties, and 20x more than the max payout on Execution Layer Bounties.
