Bitcoin.org, the original website about Bitcoin (BTC), was hacked by online fraudsters and is currently down.
Cobra, Bitcoin.org’s anonymous curator, stated on September 23 that Bitcoin.org had been compromised. Hackers managed to post a scam notice.
It appears that Bitcoin.org was hacked, and the whole site has been replaced by a scam asking for Bitcoin. Matt Corallo, a Bitcoin developer, reported the incident on Twitter.
Namecheap temporarily disabled its website following a question from Corallo. Cobra says that the Bitcoin.org website may be unavailable for a few more days.
Users reported that Bitcoin.org had been showing a classic giveaway announcement. Scammers were reportedly able to collect $17,000 from their addresses before it went offline.
https://t.co/Tp6AcXavUW has been breached. The website is a classic example of the ‘double your cash’ scam. The scammers have profited (as of this writing) roughly $17,000.#Bitcoin pic.twitter.com/BXFMqC61EW

Cobra suggested that hackers had exploited a DNS flaw to disable the website. He stated that Bitcoin.org’s Cloudflare accounts were safe and that no servers or malware was found.
https://t.co/OsFgRFRRZb hasn’t been hacked, ever. Then we move to Cloudflare and are hacked two months later. Could you please explain to me where your traffic was being routed? Hack didn’t generate any traffic to my actual server. @Cloudflare @eastdakota

This latest attack follows a DDoS attack on Bitcoin.org in July. There was also a ransom demand for an undisclosed bitcoin amount. This attack occurred just one week after a UK court ordered that the website stop hosting the Bitcoin whitepaper. It was ruled in favor of Satoshi Nakamoto, a self-proclaimed Bitcoin SV proponent Craig Wright.
